Product Review: Embrace The Natural You Twist Truffle Whip (The Braiding Files #5)
Price: $13 for 8 oz
Ingredients: Water, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Unrefined Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Vitamin E, Fragrance and Essential Oils. **NOTE: According to the website, as of 2/2/16, this product no longer has shea butter, Jamaican black castor oil, or vegetable emulsifying wax. So it may be even more low porosity friendly!
Scent: Light

Results: I bought this product last September at a market near my job. As a nice bonus, this is a Michigan-based company, so I can pick it up on the ground. When I purchased it, I met the owner, who uses her product on her own hair (bonus #2).
While I have been using this product for a while now, it has taken me this long to review it because I was not certain what to say. It leaves my hair soft and gave it nice sheen about 8 times out of 10. The rest of the time, my hair was really dry, and felt coated, and I wanted to figure out why because I really like this product. I have realized two things. First, I need to use water or a very moisturizing leave-in under this product for it to work well on my hair. If I don’t put enough moisture into my hair under this product, it leaves my hair dry. While this product comes with its own moisture built in, my greedy hair needs more. As I mentioned in my post on coconuts, I need a lot of water for coconut to work in my hair.
Second, if I use a heavier/coating
leave-in under this product, the residue from the this product will combine
with the residue from the leave-in, and my hair feels coated. As I note above, the ingredients have
changed, and the more heavy/coating ingredients have been removed, so it may
now be perfect for me. I plan to try the
new formulation soon. Maybe the new
formulation will be a “love it”.As an aside, this product reminds me a lot of Annabelle's Perfect Blend Hair Creme in both texture and the way it works on my hair,
except APB does not have coconut oil.
Thus, if you already like that product, you may want to try this, and
vice versa.

Ingredient Investigation: The Coconuts (Coconut Oil vs Coconut Milk)
Hey,
beautiful people. It has been an awhile
since I did an ingredient investigation, but I’ve had a burning question for a while
now that I wanted to look into. If you
have read my blog for any period of time, you know that my hair does not really
like coconut oil in stylers. It leaves my hair
feeling coated and hard. That being
said, my hair loves leave-ins with coconut milk, coconut cream and coconut fruit, like My Honey Child Coconut Hair Milk, Silk Dreams Mocha Silk Hair Milk and Aubrey Organics Island Replenishing Conditioner. So, I decided to
investigate the different types of coconut products, and how they are
made. Below is a summary of what I found.
A green
coconut (young coconut) starts off with coconut water and soft, gel-like meat. As the coconut ages, the coconut has less
water and the meat becomes more firm. Coconut
fruit is the “meat” inside the coconut. Coconut milk is extracted from coconut fruit (frequently using water as part of the process), and coconut oil is extracted from coconut milk. Thus, coconut oil has the least amount of water of the three.
One way to make coconut milk/oil is through a process called "wet-milling fermentation". Freshly grated coconut is blended with water to make coconut milk. The milk then sits for hours (sometimes overnight) so that it separates into a liquid and coconut cream/butter. The coconut cream is scooped out, and boiled until the coconut solids fall to the bottom and turn brown. Then, the oil is filtered, and Voila!
In case you are curious (I was), from what I've read, heating the milk to create the oil is actually good. This particular wet-milling fermentation process produces the highest level of antioxidants in the coconut oil. Both the oil and the anti-oxidants are thermally stable, so heating doesn't break them down. In fact, simmering the cream for a long time at a high temperature dissolves more anti-oxidants into the oil! Who knew.
Based on my research, I think the difference for me is that coconut oil is a purer concentration from the coconut, as opposed to coconut milk and coconut fruit, which have water. Also, this explains why my hair likes co-washes and conditioners with coconut oil -- because I'm using them in the shower. In essence, my hair only seems to like coconut when it is with a lot of water, probably to counteract the protein-like properties and because my hair generally loves things that have high water content.

Promise: From the website - Dry curls have no fear, extra moisturizing Supercurl is here. This creamy hydrator has dual-power abilities to stretch out and detangle curls in very kinky, tight textures, yet define curls in medium to loose curly textures.
Scent: Possibly papaya, definitely a sweet citrus
Consistency: Lightweight cream
Results: I like this product. The Polymide-1 gave me pause because I had never heard of this ingredient before, but the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database has it rated low on the hazard scale, which is good. The cream moisturizes some, but not a lot. It does leave my hair soft, and it provides my hair with a lot of sheen and definition. It also absorbs fairly quickly into my hair because it is so lightweight. Also, despite the price, a little goes a long way. I had a sample size that I got from an event, and it lasted through several braid styles. However, I would like to buy a bigger jar.

Product Review: Obia Curl Moisture Cream (The Braiding Files #1)
Ingredients: Purified Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Grapeseed Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Olive Oil, Argan oil, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Burdock Root, Lavender Oil, Coconut Oil, Soybean Oil, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera Oil, Fragrance.
Promise: From the website - This specially formulated leave-in conditioner is full of luxurious oils that will seal in moisture and condition your hair. The star ingredient is antioxidant rich Argan Oil that is known for providing intense moisture. Plus it is packed with Grape seed Oil, Olive Oil, Burdock Root and Vitamin E that will strengthen, add shine, smooth and promote hair growth. pH balanced Curl Moisture Cream seals in moisture and minimizes frizz by smoothing and closing the cuticle.
Scent: Not sure
Consistency: Thin Cream
Results: I’ve used an entire jar of this stuff and I was pretty consistent in the products that I paired this with, but I still got differing results. For example, most of the time, I did not get any sheen from this product, and it left my hair looking dull. However, a couple times, I did get sheen. Also, most of the time, it left my hair very moisturized, but there were a few times that it made my hair hard. I did notice that sometimes, when my hair got hard, it was because I tried to use this product as a moisturizer in between washes, so it was building up on my strands. It is rich in some really great oils, but my hair cannot take a lot of oil, especially not coconut oil. This is also the reason it took 8+ hours for this product to absorb into my hair. For all these reasons, I can’t call this my holy grail of braiding/twisting creams. I need a product that I can count on, and I would like a little more sheen in the process

Product Review: Battle of the Silk Dreams Moisturizers
Hey, beautiful people! One of my favorite deep conditioner product lines this year is Silk Dreams Hair Care, so I decided to try a couple of her moisturizers -- the Wheat Germ Butter Conditioner and the Mocha Silk Hair Milk. While the Wheat Germ Butter is labeled a conditioner, her website said that it could also be used as a leave-in. I tried both bottles until I used them both up, sometimes using just one, and sometimes putting one product on one side of my head and the other product on the other side.
Price: The Wheat Germ Butter Conditioner wins. It is 8 oz. for $10 or 16 oz. for $16. The Mocha Silk Hair Milk is 8 oz. for $12.
Ingredients: This one was a close call for me, so I’m calling it a tie. Both have amazing ingredients, and both have a nice protein.

Scent: The Mocha Silk wins for me because it has a light chocolate scent. The Wheat Germ did not smell like much of anything to me.
Results: The Wheat Germ Butter Conditioner wins for my hair, though they are both great. They both kept my hair moisturized for days and they both have this nice consistency of a thick lotion, but the Wheat Germ Butter left my hair feeling a little bit softer. However, I think the Capuacu Butter and the Cocoa Butter combined in the Mocha Silk Hair Milk were just too much. I have to be careful with heavier butters on my hair. Also, the Wheat Germ Butter left my hair feeling conditioned when I washed it out on wash day, probably because it is also designed to be a conditioner.

Power Product Review: Koils By Nature (& The Deep Conditioner Files #14)
Hey, beautiful people!
As I mentioned last year, I purchased a single Curl Collection box when
they featured Koils by Nature. As part
of the box, I received the Ultra Moisturizing CocoAloe Deep Conditioner, the
Moisturizing Shealoe Leave-in Conditioner, the Peppermint Herbal Soothing Curl
Defining Gel, and the Marvelous Mango Hair & Body Butter.
Ultra Moisturizing
CocoAloe Deep Conditioner with Argan Oil ($18 for 12 oz) - I love this
product! This and the leave-in are my
two favorite products out of the box. It
is a lotion consistency (not overly thick).
It goes on smooth, has a lot of slip for detangling. It actually makes a great pre-poo. I was able to use this to detangle my dry
hair without any water. It also revived
my hair within a couple weeks, after I had been neglecting it a little.
Moisturizing
Shealoe Leave-in Conditioner with Argan Oil ($20 for 12 oz) – I love
this product. It has a creamy
consistency, which seems to be best for leave-in conditioners for my hair. It goes on smoothly, has a lot of slip and is
moisturizing. I’m not sure why, but it
smells a little like citrus fruit. It is
a very light scent. I would definitely
re-buy this.
Peppermint Herbal
Soothing Curl Defining Gel ($14 for 8 oz) – This was my least favorite
product in the box. I tried it on a wash n go. I also tried it on a bun. It smooths on easily, and has a lot of slip
(probably because of the marshmallow root and slippery elm), but it has little to
no hold and it flaked a little on my wash n go.
My wash n go also shrunk A LOT and frizzed. My favorite part of this gel was the
peppermint. It smells strongly of
peppermint, and leaves a cooling tingle on my scalp, so I know the peppermint
is not just fragrance. Because I couldn’t
find a way to use this that worked for me, it is a “leave it”.
Marvelous Mango Hair
& Body Butter ($25 for 4 oz) – I took one look at the butter, and
knew that I could not use it on my hair.
However, I love it for my hands and elbows. It is kind of creamy and melts easily,
leaving my hands baby soft. I keep it in
the diaper bag, and use it whenever my hands get dry. In complete disclosure, I also used it on the
baby’s legs once when I noticed they were a little dry at the pediatrician’s
office. Do not buy this if you do not
like the smell of mango, however, because it does have a strong mango scent. This would be a “love it”, but my hubby
thinks the mango smell is too strong and it is expensive. Thus, this is a “like it”.

is strong.
Consistency: Creamy, medium
thickness. Not too light, and not too
heavy
Results: In full disclosure, I
have been using this deep conditioner for a couple years now, and I love
it. Even though I am near the end of my
deep conditioner challenge, this is still my favorite. It is amazing as both an overnight deep
conditioner and in the traditional deep conditioning. This is one of the few conditioners that
actually says you can use it as a pre-poo.
It is light enough that it easily spreads through the hair, but it packs
a powerful punch as both a moisturizing and strengthening deep conditioner. For people who cannot use Aubrey Organics GPS
(like me), try this one.

Product Review: Silk Dreams Razzberry Coconut Affair (The Deep Conditioner Files #10)
Price: $12
for 8 oz.
Promise: Luscious and ultra
creamy Razzberry Coconut Affair conditions, moisturizes, and smooths medium to
thick hair; not recommended for fine hair.
Scent: Conditioner. I expected it to smell like raspberries because it has real raspberry powder, but it didn’t smell like much of anything at all.
Consistency: Super
thick and creamy
Results:
I really wanted to love this product because I love the Vanilla Silk Deep Conditioner and I love the company.
Silk Dreams makes reasonably priced, quality products (despite the name
similarity, there is no relation). This worked better for my hair than the Chocolate Bliss, but it wasn't spectacular. I tried this twice before giving it away to my sister. The first time, I inadvertently let it sit on my hair for over 24
hours. It melted into my hair eventually and my hair felt ok and somewhat moisturized. The second time, I did an overnight deep conditioning pre-shampoo. My hair was moisturized this time as well, but still not like with the Vanilla Silk. I think this was just too thick for my
low porosity, fine-medium strands. In Silk Dreams’ defense, the website and the
jar does warn that this is not for fine strands, and I should have
listened. Lesson learned. From now on, I need to focus on conditioners that are geared toward my finer strands, instead of the medium ones.
If you like the Chocolate Bliss, you may like
this because it is similar in consistency and the effect it had on my hair. The product junkie in me isn't done trying out this line. I have one Silk Dreams deep conditioner left in my stash that I am using now -- the Avocado Pudding (review coming soon). Once I use up more of my product stash, I also want to try the Destination Hydration, Shea What Conditioner, Mocha Silk Infusion, Wheat Germ Butter Conditioner and the Almond Buttercream.

Power Product Line Review: As I Am Naturally
As I Am Hydration
Elation Intensive Conditioner:
If you have been following me for awhile, then you should know by now
that my usual routine is to deep condition overnight first. The conditioner itself is light like cake
batter, and it allowed me to detangle some, but it left my hands feeling a
little weird. As for results, this deep
conditioner was nothing to write home about.
I felt like it didn’t do anything to moisturize my hair, despite the
name. A couple days later, I tried using
this in the shower as a regular conditioner, and it didn’t do anything that way
either. I would not repurchase this

As I Am Coconut
Cowash: Next to the SheScentIt Blueberry Cowash, this is my favorite co-wash. It cleanses while moisturizing.
In the past, when I’ve had a deep conditioner that left my hair dry, but
I still needed to cleanse, I’ve used this and it brought my hair right
back. This wash day was no different. I love this stuff! I’m not currently purchasing any more
cowashes because I want to see if I actually need them. Otherwise, I would repurchase this in a
heartbeat.
As I Am Double Butter
Cream Rich Daily Moisturizer: In
the days following my wash day, I tried to use the double butter cream to
moisturize my hair. It didn’t work. This product is much thinner than I thought
it would be given that you normally see it in a jar. The top 6 ingredients are: Water infused with extracts, Shea Butter,
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, and Emulsifying
Wax NF. However, even though water is
the first ingredient, this had more of a sealing effect on my hair than a
moisturizing one. I also think that my
hair doesn’t like Emulsifying Wax. The
remaining ingredients also made me dislike this product. Given the price of a regular sized jar of the
double butter cream, I was surprised to see hydrogenated vegetable oil in the
list of ingredients at all, and definitely surprised to see it as the third
ingredient. While I’m sure it works
perfectly fine as a sealant simply because it is an oil, I haven’t heard of any
great benefits that it has. The cream
also has lanolin and some other ingredients that are not so great for my hair. There are a ton of good oils in this product,
but they are further down the ingredient list and likely in low concentrations.
I won’t be repurchasing this product.
In short, I like the co-wash, leave-in and gel. I would leave the rest.

Product Review: Silk Dreams Chocolate Bliss (The Deep Conditioner Files #9)
Promise: From
the jar -- Chocolate Bliss is decadent and indulgent and guilt free. The Spa Silk line is all about treating
yourself and taking time for you, so indulge in a little chocolate bliss.; From the website -- When asked by a fellow
hair board diva to describe Chocolate Bliss, this was my response: It is almost
as moisturizing as Vanilla Silk, but with no protein. It's not a treatment like
Vanilla Silk, so it can be used more often without worry of over-moisturizing.
Scent: Strong
Chocolate
Consistency: Thick

Results:
I really wanted to like this product because I love the Vanilla Silk Deep
Conditioner and I love the company. Silk

This did not work. There was a
film on my hair when I rinsed it out, and my hair felt dry and hard. Thinking that perhaps the film might be
because of something else, the next time, I washed my hair with diluted African Black Soap first, then I put this conditioner on and left it for 24 hours. It never really sunk into my hair. Also, my hair still had a slight film on it
when I rinsed the conditioner off. Plus,
my hair was still hard and dry (i.e., not moisturized). I think this is just too thick and heavy for
my low porosity strands. It could also
be the coconut oil, which is in the first five ingredients and has never worked

Product Review: Hairveda Moist Condition PRO Conditioner

for strengthening the hair. We use wheat
protein derived from organic sources. We've
designed it to add manageability and shine. Designed for all hair types. Safe and mild for natural, relaxed and color
processed hair.
Scent: Citrusy

Consistency: Like
wet lotion
Results: This was the last of my Black Friday Hairveda purchases. This
reminds me a lot of the Acai Phyto Conditioner, though it may be a little more runny. I used this both as an overnight deep
conditioner and as a rinse out conditioner. I liked it both ways, but
preferred it as a rinse out conditioner. It leaves
my hair feeling strong, yet moisturized. However, as an overnight, there
was a slight hardness to my hair. Not
super hard, but noticeable. I think it
may be the wheat protein or the coconut oil. The ingredients listed on the website are now different and don't include coconut or soybean oil, so I may try this again.

Product Review: Alikay Naturals CoWash Me Cleansing Conditioner

Promise: Formulated
to be gentle enough for daily use on curly, kinky or straight hair. Leaves hair soft, moisturized, clean and easy
to detangle. Hair will feel and smell great!
This Product is 100% Natural and 90%
Organic. Cleans hair without the
stripping it of natural oils caused by sulfates.
Scent: Like
strawberry lemon starburst or skittles
Consistency: It
was very runny. It almost ran off my
hand mid picture.
Results: My
hair definitely did not feel stripped.
However, I’m not sure this cleansed my hair at all because my hair didn't feel any cleaner after using it and I can't really tell which ingredient is the cleansing agent. It was
a great conditioner, though. This had lots
of slip and was great for detangling.
Unfortunately, I run through conditioner way too fast to ever use this as just a good conditioner. I used up the
8 oz. bottle in about 2 washes. After
the second wash, I only had enough for 1/4 of my hair. If I had a smaller head of hair, I would add
this to the regular rotation. Maybe, if

Product Review: Purabody Capuacu Butter
Price: $14
for 4 oz. (wait for a sale)
Promise: A rich
creamy blend of natural butters and oils to combat dry, brittle hair. Cupuacu is well known for its high fatty acid
content which benefits dry, damaged hair while protecting moisture and leaving
hair soft and silky.
Scent: I
bought the Tahitian Vanilla scent. It smells
like yummy vanilla cake.
Consistency: Like softened
butter or margarine. It is lighter that
whipped shea butter.
Results: Unfortunately,
I purchased this and tried to use it before I realized that my hair just doesn't do well with most straight butters. Then,
I made a rookie mistake and tried it again later because I really wanted to
like it. I just could not get it to
absorb into my hair. I ended up having
to put a headband on to cover my edges because my hair was just white with the
butter sitting on top of it. This would
probably be great for someone with high porosity hair if their hair normally
likes butters.

Scent: Like
citrusy orange cream and baby
Consistency: Heavy
face cream
Results: I
tried this three different ways. The
first time, I tried it as an overnight deep conditioner before my shampoo (my
favorite way to deep condition). Then, I
tried it under my Hot Heads Heat cap after using shampoo. Then, I tried it under a heat cap for 20
minutes after chelating. No matter which
of the three I tried, the result was just ok. I couldn’t get it to moisturize my hair enough,
although it worked best under the heat cap.
For the Hot Heads and the overnight, the conditioner just sat on top of
my hair. I think, for my hair, this really
needs a lot of heat to penetrate my strands, so the Hot Heads cap wasn’t
sufficient and the overnight did basically nothing at all. This may work better for normal to high
porosity hair. I remember this making my
hair feel good just after I big chopped, when my porosity was probably a little
higher.

Product Review: She Scent It Coco Cream Leave-in Conditioner
Price: $12.50
for 9 oz.Scent: Coconutty vanilla, like a sweet pina colada
Consistency: Light, creamy liquid
Results: I
used this frequently after a deep conditioning and then washing my hair with
the blueberry co-wash. I was surprised
at how soft and moisturized my hair felt. It even helps with detangling. I even loved this in the winter time, despite the glycerin. I just had to layer oil
or a thick cream on top to seal it in. The promises are all true, except the shine. I didn't see any shine or sheen to my hair from using this product.

Product Review: She Scent It Marshmallow Herbal Hair Cream
Price: $16 for 9.5 oz.
Scent: Floral soap
Consistency: Like body cream
Results: I received
this as a sample with my other She Scent It purchases, and I am happy I did not
purchase it. This had the same scent as
the Banana Brulee deep conditioner to me, which I am not a fan of. Also, this left my hair super dry and
wiry. Some people are able to moisturize
their hair with aloe vera juice, but I am not.
I need water.

and creamy, like body lotion.
Results: I
liked this conditioner. My hair felt
moisturized and strong after using it.
Plus, the scent is lighter than the Moisture Riche deep conditioner that
I previously reviewed; however, it is still not a scent that I would want to
have on my head for long periods of time.
