Wash Day 02-04-2017

Hey, beautiful people!  I have been lazy, but it is time for me to get back to posting my wash days.  I noticed recently that my hair is getting a little thinner.  I suspect it is because I haven’t been regularly deep conditioning like I used to, but the only way to tell for sure is to start tracking it.

To start off this wash day, I used the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner.  This was a birthday gift from a good friend, who knows I have a love for certain hair products (thanks, Margeaux!).  As a first impression, this is great at detangling.  I couldn’t really tell if it cleansed my hair because my hair wasn’t that dirty, but I am going to try it a few times in a row to see if I get buildup.  The only downside to this conditioner was the smell.  I am sensitive to certain smells, and this one has a very perfumed scent.

Next, because I didn’t do an overnight deep condition, I used an old favorite – Hairveda’s Acai Berry Phytokeratin Hair Reconstructer.  This product only needs a few minutes to work and it gives my hair a lot of strength.  It takes me right up to the line of protein overload without getting there, so I don’t need to follow it up with another deep conditioner.

Once I got out the shower, I used As I Am’s Leave-in Conditioner, which is great.  Then, I layered on Camille Rose’s Coca Nibs and Honey Growth Serum, which is my favorite mixed oil product.  Finally, I used the Eco Styler Coconut Gel.  I don’t know how I feel about this gel yet, but it may have the best smell of all the Eco Styler gels.

To style, I did a top knot bun.  First, I put the top half of my hair in a ponytail, and did a loose two-strand twist bun.  Then, I took the back half of my hair and draped it over the first.  This two-step process makes the front look cleaner, and creates a fuller bun for me.  Next time I do this, I’ll take pictures because it is hard to describe.

Total Wash Day Time:  56 minutes

The End of The Deep Conditioner Challenge (The Deep Conditioner Files)

Hey, beautiful people!  As you may remember from a post over a year and a half ago, I wanted to try out a ton of deep conditioners to find out which ones best worked for my hair.  Over that time, I tried a lot, and posted 16 reviews as part of my search.  I learned that my hair loves a moisturizing deep conditioner that also has a light protein.  This is probably because my hair is fine, which means it needs protein.  However, my hair is also low porosity, which means that it can't take a lot of protein.  I also prefer a little slip in case I want to detangle without a rinse out conditioner.

Here are the top six conditioners that worked best for me, based on the way my hair felt and price:
I still plan to try a couple other deep conditioners because I'm a product junkie, but I think I'm pretty much set with these.  Next up on my list to try:
  • ORS Hair Mayo
  • Silk Dreams Destination Hydration
  • Silk Dreams Shea What Conditioner
  • Silk Dreams Mocha Silk Infusion
  • Camille Rose Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment
  • Camille Rose Nourishing Cream Hair Bath
Which deep conditioners do you love?

Wash Day 06-13-2015 - Crown Twist

Hey, beautiful people!  This weekend, I didn't do a deep condition overnight because I fell asleep before I put the conditioner in my hair.  Then, when I woke up in the morning, I didn't have time to do a deep condition because we had a long day ahead.  Thus, I just did a quick co-wash with Herbal Essence Long Term Relationship.  Then, when I got out the shower, I wasn't in the mood for a wash and go, so I got creative.  I divided my hair into four ponytails, twisted each ponytail into two twists, and wrapped the twists around my head (using bobby pins) to make a crown.  For my twists, I used the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream and Hairveda Red Tea Hair Ends Serum.

Total wash to style time: ~50 minutes.

Wash Day 06-06-2015 (Koils By Nature & Uncle Funky's Daughter Wash N Go)

Hey, beautiful people!  For this wash day, I did a couple experiments.  The first was unintentional.  As usual, I did an overnight deep conditioner first.  I had just enough Hairveda Acai Phyto Berry Conditioner in the bottle for one side of my hair.  I wasn't ready to open up another bottle; so, on the other side of my hair, I used another favorite light protein deep conditioner - Aubrey Organics Island Naturals Replenishing Conditioner.  These are both awesome conditioners for my hair.  The Hairveda was easier to apply because it glides better on my strands.  However, the Aubrey Organics left my hair softer when I washed the conditioners out of my hair the next day.

Next, after I rinsed out the conditioners, I went straight into styling.  After my successful wash n go last week, I wanted to see if I could duplicate the results with another favorite leave-in conditioner -- Koils by Nature Leave-In.  After applying the leave-in, I applied my oil mix and applied Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic for my wash n go.  So far, so good.  My hair seems a little bit shinier and it dried a little faster; but, other than that, it looks pretty much the same.  It did flake a little, but it was barely noticeable.

Wash and style time - 35 minutes, including periodic pauses to entertain the baby, who was watching me apply products

Dry time - ~6 hours for the front, and the back is still damp.

The top is a picture of wet hair, and the bottom is dry

2014 Black Friday Aftermath

Hey, beautiful people!  Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones.  I hung out with my close family, including my newest addition, and probably ate way too much.  I also stayed up a little later to finish off my Black Friday shopping online.  In addition to my prior Curlmart purchase and my Jane Carter purchase, here are the other things I bought to stock up for next year:

Curlmart - $74.46 ($69.46 + $5 shipping)
- Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter
- Oyin Handmade Hair Dew x 3
- Curl Junkie Repair Me! Reconstructive Hair Treatment

Bonbons Cheveux Boutique - $36.70 ($32 + $4.70 shipping)
- Satin Scrunchies x 4
- Elastic Satin Bonnet

HairVeda - $60.15 ($53.20 + $6.95 shipping)
- Whipped Creme Hair Moisturizer
- Whipped Clouds
- Red Satin Tea Moisturizer
- Acai Phyto Berry Conditioner x 4
- Red Tea Hair Ends Serum (free gift with purchase)

Oyin Handmade - $43.48 (free shipping)
- Whipped Shea in Rich Almond Scent x 2
- Snack Pack for Body

The Obsessed Crocheter - $44.63 (free shipping)
- Satin Lined Chunky Basket Weave Beanie

Overall, I was more behaved than last year.  I spent less this Black Friday.  Also, my hair product purchases were all staples, except for the moisturizers I purchased from Hairveda.  The PJ in me wouldn't let me just buy staples.  With the new satin bonnet and beanie, I should be all set for the harsh Michigan winters for years to come, which should make next year's list even smaller.

What did you buy?  Did you do better, worse or the same as last year?

Finalizing The Black Friday Shopping List

Hey, beautiful people!  As I mentioned in a previous post, I started my black friday shopping early this year.  Thus far, I did a mini shopping spree at Curlmart and then picked up a couple jars of my favorite twist defining cream during the Jane Carter 40% off sale that I mentioned on Twitter.  I also just bought a satin lined beanie because winter came a little early this year, and I haven't been able to find my satin lined hooded scarf since the move.  I'll do a review of the beanie once it arrives and I've had a chance to wear it.

Now, I'm trying to narrow down on what is left for my list without going overboard.  The list has changed several times, so here is my current plan:
- Oyin Hair Dew (1 liter)
- Oyin Whipped Shea (rich almond scent)
- Oyin body snack pack
- Hairveda Acai Berry Phyto Conditioner
- Satin elastic bonnet
- Satin scrunchies

I took Purabody off my list only because I'm trying to shrink my list of staples, and I want to see if I can stick to just Oyin.  I'm really hoping that Oyin has a Black Friday sale, but I haven't heard anything so far.  If they don't have a sale, my list may change yet again...

For those of you still formulating your hair shopping lists, here are a few websites that have catalogued the sales:

Yes, I am an enabler.

Happy Shopping!!!

Update 09-20-2014: Black Friday In September

With the new baby coming in less than a month and Curlmart having a Sweet16 sale, I decided to get started on my Black Friday shopping early.  As you may remember from last year's Black Friday post, I went overboard so I wanted to make sure I kept myself in check this year.  I may have still gone a little overboard, but nowhere near as much.  Here is what I bought from Curlmart:
Grand Total:  $132.08 (plus $5 shipping)
Savings: $50.88 (plus shipping savings)

I saved a lot of money by doing my shopping a little early and coupon hunting (use cm15 with your order to save more).  We'll ignore the fact that I could have saved more if I did not buy as much.

Here is what is tentatively left on my Black Friday shopping list:

What is on your Black Friday list?  Have you started shopping?

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Product Review: Hairveda Moist Condition PRO Conditioner

Price:  $9.99 for 16 oz.

Ingredients:   Water, Coconut Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Soybean Oil, Paraben-free preservative, Phthalate -free fragrance.

Promise:  From the website - Our wheat protein-enriched conditioner carries moisture and protein into the hair without weighing it down or dulling.  Soy protein delivers the maximum amount of nutrients into the hair follicles where protein deficiencies occur.  Moist Condition PRO provides building blocks for strengthening the hair.  We use wheat protein derived from organic sources.  We've designed it to add manageability and shine.  Designed for all hair types.  Safe and mild for natural, relaxed and color processed hair.

Scent:  Citrusy starburst scent

Consistency:  Like wet lotion

Results:  This was the last of my Black Friday Hairveda purchases.  This reminds me a lot of the Acai Phyto Conditioner, though it may be a little more runny.  I used this both as an overnight deep conditioner and as a rinse out conditioner.  I liked it both ways, but preferred it as a rinse out conditioner.  It leaves my hair feeling strong, yet moisturized.  However, as an overnight, there was a slight hardness to my hair.  Not super hard, but noticeable.  I think it may be the wheat protein or the coconut oil.  The ingredients listed on the website are now different and don't include coconut or soybean oil, so I may try this again.  Either way, I think I prefer the Acai Phyto Conditioner over this one.

Love it, Like it or Leave It:  Like It

Update 5-27-14: Rollersetting Fail

Hey, beautiful people!  My hair has been in desperate need of a trim for a couple weeks now, so I decided to take advantage of the long holiday to finally do it.  There are a number of ways to trim, all involving the use of small sections.  I decided to trim my hair in its curly state in sections small enough for my extra wide Curlformers.  That way, I could trim and style all at the same time.  This was also a great time for me to try out the It's A 10 Miracle Leave-in that I have heard so much about.

Here is what I did:
(1) Deep conditioned overnight with Silk Dreams Vanilla Silk
(2) Washed hair with Dr. Woods Pure Black Soap
(3) Conditioned / detangled with Hairveda Moist Condition Pro

Because I wanted to test out how well the It's A 10 worked, I used just It's A 10 on the left side of my hair and It's A 10 plus Carol's Daughter Chocolat Smoothing Blow Dry Cream on the right side.

Before putting a curlformer on a section of hair, I would put on my leave-in(s), comb it through, and then stretched my hair  between two fingers to trim off the last 1/4 to 1/2 inch.  I was ok with trimming off this much because I haven't trimmed my hair since my big chop.  My goal was not to make my hair even.  I just wanted to get rid of the ends.  It took about an hour to put in my Curlformers because of the added trim step.  After putting in my Curlformers, I sat under the dryer for an hour, in my favorite dryer pose, until all of the curls were dry.

After taking out the Curlformers, my hair was was amazingly soft on both sides, but the curls had almost no hold.  The side with just It's A 10 had a little curl, but was mainly just poofy.  The It's A 10 + Carol's Daughter side held the curl for a about an hour or so before puffing up.  By the end of the day, all I had was a curly fro.  It was potentially cute, but not the look I was going for at the time.

I think this was the first time I've had my Curlformer set poof out.  Even my set with Oyin Hair Dew didn't poof out.  Next time, I think I want to try a mousse/wrap lotion for a firmer hold.

What do you use for your sets?

Consistency:  Very thick, though it reminded me of a creamy orange sherbet.  You see I had to abuse the bottle to get it out.

Results:  I used this as a rinse out conditioner and I loved it!  It gave my hair so much slip, along with my shower.  Use with caution.  My husband actually hated using the shower after me if I used this because it made him slip and slide all over.

Product Review: Hairveda SitriNillah (The Deep Conditioner Files #4)

Price:  $18 for 16 oz.

Ingredients:  Water, Coconut oil, Castor Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Steryl Alcohol, Stearakloniun Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Orange oil, Orange Extract, Vanilla Extract, Lactic Acid, Germall Plus, Fragrance.

Promise:  From the website - SitriNillah is perfect for conditioning and softening your hair after a relaxer or protein treatment.  Our ingredients are perfectly infused to bring the life back to your hair. Nourishing Orange oil penetrates deep down to treat lifeless and brittle hair.  Orange peel, used for centuries in Ayurveda hair and skin remedies is known for enhancing the hair's supple nature.

Scent:  Like citrusy orange cream and baby

Consistency:  Heavy face cream

Results:  I tried this three different ways.  The first time, I tried it as an overnight deep conditioner before my shampoo (my favorite way to deep condition).  Then, I tried it under my Hot Heads Heat cap after using shampoo.  Then, I tried it under a heat cap for 20 minutes after chelating.  No matter which of the three I tried, the result was just ok.  I couldn’t get it to moisturize my hair enough, although it worked best under the heat cap.  For the Hot Heads and the overnight, the conditioner just sat on top of my hair.  I think, for my hair, this really needs a lot of heat to penetrate my strands, so the Hot Heads cap wasn’t sufficient and the overnight did basically nothing at all.  This may work better for normal to high porosity hair.  I remember this making my hair feel good just after I big chopped, when my porosity was probably a little higher.

Love it, Like it or Leave It:  Leave It.  For my lifestyle, I need a deep conditioner that I can do overnight or under a heat cap.  Plus, this just didn’t wow me anymore.

Cleansing Agents Part 2

Hey, HHJs!  In my last post, I talked about the three types of surfactants usually used in cleansers:  anionic surfactants (negative charge), zwitterionic / amphoteric surfactants (hybrid charge), and nonionic surfactants (no charge).

This post is about some of the cleansing agents in these three categories to look for.  Based on what I’ve read, here is a list of some cleansing agents to look for in a cleansing conditioner or a shampoo:

Anionic surfactant-based products include:

Zwitterionic / Amphoteric surfactant-based products include:
  • Cocamidopropyl betaine aka cocobetaine or cocabetaine (used in Burts Bees Baby Shampoo and Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream)
  • Sodium lauroamphoacetate (used in Ouidad Curl Co-wash)

Nonionic surfactant-based products:

Some cleansing products may also contain citrus fruits, such as lemon or orange extract, or contain apple cider vinegar, which break up oil.  Also, some cleansing products may contain plant-based ingredients that are high in saponins.  For example, SheScentIt’s Blueberry Co-wash Conditioner contains yucca root.  Wikipedia has a long list of plant-based soap substitutes, which can be found here.  I know that yucca root is a surfactant, but I’m not sure what kind.  I’ve seen some articles refer to it as anionic and some refer to it as non-ionic.

Finally, some cleansing conditioners may contain clays that have cleansing properties, such as kaolin, bentonite, rhassoul (also called ghassoul), or green clay.  While it is not marketed as a cleansing conditioner, I’ve found that Shea Moisture’s Purification Mask feels like it cleanses my hair.  It contains both African black soap and kaolin clay.

Based on personal experience, I can’t use shampoos containing sodium laurel sulfate, olefin sulfate or sodium lauroamphoacetate.  These cleansers are too harsh for my hair, so I avoid them.  Thus far, my hair seems to like sodium cocoyl isethionate; cocamidopropyl betaine; decyl glucoside; and PEG-40 castor oil, which are all mild cleansers.

If you can’t figure out the cleansers in your product, look for the INCI name, which may give you a clue.  SwiftCraftMonkey also has a wonderful chart of surfactants and a 17-page document walking through some of the key ones.

What are some of your favorite surfactants for cleansing your hair?

HAPPY CLEANSING!!!
