The End Of The Braiding Challenge
Winter is officially over and I am doing less braided styles, so I am officially ending my braiding challenge. This has been a fun challenge. Through it, I've learned that my hair prefers "wet creams" (almost thick lotion texture) and "wet butters" if the butter is very light and fluffy. Water has to be the first ingredient, and there has to be a good concentration of it.
Over the course of this challenge, I tried at least 16 butters and twisting creams. These were my favorites, starting with my most liked:

3. Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream
4. Camille Rose Aloe Whipped Butter Gel
5. Uncle Funky's Daughter Supercurl Miracle Moisture Cream & Extra Butter combined
I was surprised that only one of my Camille Rose butters made the list, and that the Almond Jai Twisting Butter wasn't at the top after my Camille Rose Battle of the Butters. I also learned through this challenge that the leave-in under my butter can sometimes make a big difference. While Uncle Funky's Daughter Supercurl Miracle Moisture Cream started out as one of my top favorites, it dropped a little as the challenge progressed and after I tried the Uncle Funky's Daughter Extra Butter. Though Supercurl and Extra Butter gave me good sheen and hold, they need to be paired with each other or with another heavy leave-in, like Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter or the Silk Dreams Wheat Germ Butter Conditioner to get moisturized softness. Oyin Hair Dew was too light.
Sometimes, I used Eco Styler gel on top of my cream, but it didn't typically make a difference with the top ranked stylers, except that the gel made my edges and my crown neater. I also tried Aloe Vera gel once, but I my hair did not like that all.

Finally, I learned through this process that, aside from a my wash n' go, my high bun and my low bun, crown braids are my favorite go-to style. It takes about less than 15 minutes for me to do, and it will last for a few days. Also, when my crown braids start to get fuzzy, they create a great braidout with the right products. I just have to be careful because my crown breaks easily. I also have to make sure that I continue to moisturize my hair in the braids because it is easy to just leave them alone for a week without thoroughly moisturizing them, which will dry my hair out by about the third or fourth day. I am pretty sure my laziness with moisturizing my hair in braids is what led to some mild breakage and thinning that I experienced.

Camille Rose Battle of the Butters (The Braiding Files #6)
Hey, beautiful people!
I have loved Camille Rose’s Almond Jai Twisting Butter since the early
days of my natural journey. Then, when I
discovered the Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, I really liked that too, so it was only
fitting that I do a head-to-head as part of my braiding challenge. However, since I also bought the Camille Rose
Coconut Water Style Setter as part of my Black Friday haul, I decided to a head-to-head-to-head.
All three butters left my hair feeling moisturized, but they
each gave my hair a different feeling.
The Coconut Water Style Setter left my hair more frizzy and feeling coarse.
The Almond Jai Twisting Butter worked best with my hair
either already damp or spritzed with water first, and it took longer to absorb
into my hair. My hair stayed moisturized
longer with the Almond Jai than with the Coconut Water Style Setter, but the
Almond Jai takes a long time to absorb into my hair.
The Aloe Whipped Butter Gel is definitely my
favorite after this challenge, but Almond Jai is a very close second. The
Almond Jai and Aloe Whipped Butter Gel give my hair the same amount of
sheen. However, the Butter Gel is the
lightest of the three butters, and it absorbs easily into my hair. The only downside is that, despite gel being in the
name, there is very little hold.

Power Product Line Review: Camille Rose Naturals
Since I like the gel and two of the twisting butters,
Camille Rose was a strong contender, so I bought a nice chunk of products in a Black Friday haul. Here is a review of the products that I’ve
tried thus far from my haul, in order of preference. Overall, Camille Rose knocks it out of the park on cleansers and butters, and I feel in love with the growth serum. However, none of their leave-ins worked for me.
LOVE IT:
- Cocoa Nibs & Honey Ultimate Growth Serum ($16 / 8 oz.) – This is now one of my favorite Camille Rose products. It actually makes me break my dislike of oil mixes. It is light enough that it works well on my low porosity hair, while still being able to seal moisture in. As an added bonus, it has hair growing products.
- Caramel Cowash ($14 / 8 oz.) – It is a close call between this product and the Cocoa Nibs for which one I love the best. Ultimately, I chose the serum because the bottle will last longer. This co-wash is amazing, but it will go fast because I have a lot of hair. In addition to the Camille Rose heavenly scent, it has amazing slip and makes my hair feel like butter, while still being able to clean my hair. It is also gentle enough to cleanse and condition my 18-month old daughter’s hair, despite her sensitive scalp.
- Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment ($20 / 8 oz.) – I was so surprised by how well this worked on my hair as a deep conditioner. Every time I used it, it soften up my hair and left it feeling like butter when I washed it out. My only pause is that I don’t see any protein in it, and I know my hair needs protein over time.
- Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse ($11 / 12 oz.) - This is one of the few Camille Rose products that I've tried that does not smell like a sweet dessert. It cleanses my hair without stripping it, and it has incredible slip. Plus, a little goes a long way and it is cheaper per ounce than the other Camille Rose cleansers. For people who think a cleanser should foam, this does that too.
LIKE IT
- Nourishing Cream Cleanser ($11 / 8 oz.) – This is a holiday limited edition product. It reminds me of a watery version of the Carmel Cowash. It smells heavenly, has amazing slip and it cleanses my hair without stripping it, but I have other cleansers that I can get year-round that I like just as much.
- Coconut Water "Style Setter" ($15 / 8 oz.) – I was torn on this product as a styler. It is very similar to the Camille Rose Almond Jai Twist Butter in the way it works on my hair. It moisturizes, but there was little definition and sheen. However, on one sleep deprived night, I accidentally attempted to use this product as an overnight deep conditioner. It left my hair sooo soft when I washed it out. I put it in the like it, as opposed to love it, because it isn’t performing the function it is supposed to.
LEAVE IT
- Coconut Water Leave-In Treatment ($14 / 8 oz.) – This left a strange coating on my hair, though it did leave it moisturized. I ultimately donated it to my daughter’s newly formed product stash.
- Nourishing Cream Leave In ($13 / 8 oz.) - This is a holiday limited edition product, and I have no desire to ever buy it again. I tried it both right after a shower and on wet hair, and it left my bone dry.

Product Review: Camille Rose Ajani Growth and Shine Balm
Price:
$12 for 4 oz.
Ingredients: Cocoa wafers, rice bran oil, virgin
palm kernel, babassu oil, murumuru butter, candulla, honey, castor jelly,
biotin, castor oil, silky btms, ceteryl blend, natural scent
Promise: From the website – This balm is an exquisite,
hand blended hair and scalp treatment that nurtures, invigorates and conditions
dry slow growing hair. Mango, Castor and
honey were chosen for their potent conditioning and styling power. Biotin is added for its hair growing
benefits. Your hair will be left with
amazing shine.
Scent: Light chocolate
Consistency: Grainy
Results: I like this product, but not enough. True to the promise, it does leave my hair
with a lot of shine. It also leaves my
hair soft. HOWEVER, I cannot get over
the grainy nature of this product. When
I take the product out of the jar, I see little granules. They melt in my palm when I rub my hands
together, but it is hard to get all of the granules to melt. There is usually a tiny chunk left after the
majority of it has melted. I'll be reviewing the liquid growth serum from Camille Rose, which I like better. The serum is like the liquid version of this product, though the ingredients vary.

Wash n Go Recap 2015
Hey, beautiful people! As you
may remember, over the summer, I wanted to try out a a number of gels to
determine the best wash n go combination for my hair. I tried quite a few, and posted 10 results to my wash day series. As much as I wanted to love Eco
Styler because it is cheap, I couldn’t make it work because it was just too thick. I learned that my hair loves runny gels that
are snot like in consistency. While I
can do conditioner only or a cream-based styler for my wash n go, I don’t get
the same hang time. Here are the top 4 wash n go gels that worked best
for me, based on the way my hair looked, price and on-the-ground availability:
- Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic
- Camille Rose Curl Maker
- As I Am Curling Jelly
- Kinky Curly Curling Custard
My results with Camille Rose and Uncle Funky's Daughter were very similar. While I like Uncle Funky's Daughter a little more, Camille Rose is available on the ground. Kinky Curly gave me good results, but it also left a very sticky residue. I hated having wet hair on any part of my skin when I used Kinky Curly.
Next
summer, I think I am going to try a few more gels because the product junkie in
me won’t let me be. Next up on my list to try:
- Kinky Curly Curling Custard diluted with water
- Mop Top Curly Hair Custard
- Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel
- Aunt Jackie's Don't Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curl Gel

I noticed that the Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic has a longer shelf life than the Camille Rose Curl Maker. Over time, the Curl Maker becomes more sticky/tacky, and it is harder to rake through. I do not have that problem with the Curly Magic.

Wash Day 09-27-2015 - Camille Rose Curl Maker Wash N Go
Hey, beautiful people! Today I decided to try a new gel for my wash n go.
First, I did a deep condition overnight with Hydratherma Naturals Amino Plus Protein Deep Conditioner. This was my first time trying out this deep conditioner. I like it. It clearly gave my hair a protein boost, but it was mild enough that I could still use it overnight. As a random bonus, the smell reminds me of juicy fruit.
This morning, I washed my hair with Aubrey Organics White Camellia Shampoo. Then, I used Aussie Smooth to detangle and put moisture back in my hair.
To style, I applied product to 8 sections using a rake through method. On each section, I used Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion, followed by Curl Junkie Coffee-Coco Curl Cream, followed by my oil mix, followed by Camille Rose Curl Maker gel. I applied the gel very liberally. This gel reminds me of Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic by ALOT. It rakes through the same. It curls my hair the same, and it dries the same. My hair is soft, yet my curls are still defined. This is a win!
After my hair was about 80% dry (it's still damp), I trimmed a few stands that hung lower in the front than the rest of my hair. It made a stark difference. I really need to go see a professional to get a shape-up.

Product Review: Camille Rose Curlaide Moisture Butter
Name: Camille Rose Curlaide Moisture Butter
Ingredients:
Promise: From the back of the bottle -- "Our wonderful Curlaide Moisture Butter will bathe your tresses in an aromatic, nourishing and tantalizing blend of amala oil, jojoba and honey. Curlaide provides maximum moisture and curl definition."; From the Camille Rose website -- “Organic
rice milk, green tea, jojoba, macadamia and slippery elm are infused to create
this creamy blend so that your hair will feel moisturized and soft. Minimize breakage with nourishing shea butter
fruit and coconut oil. Works great for
wash n go’s, two strand twists, locks and braids.”
Consistency: Like a thick face cream. It reminds me of cake batter, but not runny.
Scent: Vanilla cake batter
Results: I think they forgot to change the label on my jar because I don't see amala oil or honey in the ingredients list. I went on a vendor website and saw marshmallow root, green algae and amala in the ingredients list, but none of these were on my label. It went on smooth like the almond jai, and it was not greasy. However, I think the ingredient combination is too heavy for my hair and actually kept moisture out of it. I tried to use it the way that I use the almond jai. I flat twisted my hair for the week using this, and then I used daily moisture on my hair. Unlike with the almond jai, by the end of the week, my hair was dry and frizzy. My hair also felt a little hard like there was protein in my hair, which makes me wonder if there really is green algae in this product. It could also just be the coconut oil, which is high on the ingredient list. This may work better on high porosity hair.
Love it or Dump it: I'm getting rid of mine, but it could be great for others. I'll stick to the Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter, which I love.

Product Review: Camille Rose Fresh Curl
Ingredients:

Promise: From the
back of the bottle -- "Our daily styling lotion will transform dull,
lifeless hair into soft, shiny and detangled curls. Infused with Panthenol to
strengthen, smooth and restore cuticles and hair follicles for healthy hair
growth." ; From a vendor (Curlmart)
-- "Camille Rose Naturals Fresh Curl is a daily curly reviving mist that
will wake up flat droopy curls. Use it as a detangler or a daily leave-in to
moisturize and nourish dry frizz hair. Your thirsty curls and coils will restored
to beautifully moisturized."
Consistency: Very thin, like pure aloe vera gel. It feels like water when I put it on my hair.
Scent: Like most of their products, it smells good, like fresh baked vanilla cookies. However, then there is something chemically to the smell, unlike other Camille Rose products I've tried.
Results: I bought this product because I love other Camille Rose products. I was disappointed. Fresh Curl did not really do anything for my hair initially, though it did seem to refresh (i.e. re-wet) my products from the day before, after I left it on for a little while. My hair did not become shiny or detangled.
Love it or Dump it: Dump it.
